California Delta + Montezuma Hills (Rio Vista, CA)
It's been a while since we've ridden on the flat and scenic California Delta backroads. Paula and others suggested doing another Delta ride so away we go. We're going to add a little twist to our route to include some cool roads/places we haven't visited yet. We'll ride from Rio Vista and take the Real McCoy Ferry over to Ryer Island. We'll ride along Steamboat Slough to the J-Mac Ferry over to Grand Island and go check out the historic Grand Island Mansion on our way into Courtland. From there we'll ride on backwater slough levee roads and ride across the little bridge back onto Ryer Island and on to Rio Vista. At this point we will have gone about 40 miles and each rider will have the option to end the ride here. From Rio Vista we'll ride a bit in the lovely green, gently-sloping Montezuma Hills with nice scenery at this time of year that will be markedly different from the previous 40 miles. Maybe we'll ride as far as Birds Landing? Much of the ride is on roads where vehicles are scarce, offering a lot of opportunities for side-by-side riding and chatting.
Meet in the parking lot adjacent to the Rio Vista City Hall. There is a short driveway adjacent to City Hall that leads to a parking lot where we usually park. If the little farmers market is going on there is also street parking and parking at the boat launch area
Distance: up to 60 miles with an option to stop at 40 miles
Pace: ~15 mph when rolling on flats, a little slower/faster on the uphills/downhills in the Montezuma Hills. Looks like Sid can lead another group for riders that are OK with riding the 40-mile loop to Courtland but at a slightly lower pace, perhaps 11-13 mph. Note that all the ferry rides are free of charge. Fun experience.
