Mt. Diablo in April
We will be doing this hilly 79 kilometre ride from the Dublin/Pleasanton BART station to the summit of Mt. Diablo and back primarily as a training ride for longer rides coming up in May. As such, stops will be kept to a minimum. We are also hoping to see some wildflowers on Mt. Diablo. There is a visitor centre at the summit that sells Gatorade and snacks. There will be a lunch stop in Black Hawk on the way back. We will use the South Gate entrance to Mt. Diablo State Park in both directions just like the New Years Day ride described here: https://www.meetup.com/SFBARC/events/235562541/
Note the descent on Mt. Diablo is long and twisty so anyone doing this ride should make sure their brakes are in top condition and they know how to use them to properly control speed and manage brake heat. Every year a number of cyclists crash descending Mt. Diablo, sometimes resulting in serious injuries. To encourage safety, Park Rangers on Mt. Diablo strictly enforce the speed limit and issue citations to cyclists who are speeding.
