Sunday Service: Schlumpf and Patterson

Contact:

We're all familiar with internally geared hubs... from those three-speed Sturmey Archer hubs that are so ubiquitous to the ultra high-tech Rohloff 14-speed and Shimano Alfine 11-speed. But, how many people are familiar with the internally geared cranks? Even a good fifteen years after we produced our first Schlumpf PBW folding bikes, the Schlumpf has still not gained in the public eye and the recently introduced Patterson Metropolis is a rarity. At this workshop, we'll show these drives, explain how they might help you, and work through the details of what it actually takes to put one on your trike. Morning snacks and caffeine provided. Workshop begins when the caffeine kicks in. Bring a flat tube to fix and tire conundrums and puzzles. Go for a ride on nearby American River Trail afterwards

He has settled on an ICE Sprint 26 recumbent trike and we have determined a configuration that will allow him to operate his trike with "pushing" actions.

We have converted an HP Velotechnik Gekko FX 26 to use trigger shifters as an experiment. It seems to work well.

Patterson Metropolis 2-speed geared crankset extends gear-range of 8-speed Terratrike Rambler

Using the Shimano Nexus internally-geared 8-speed hub on any trike gives you the enclosed reliability of planetary-geared hubs, but it's a bit slim on gear range -- particularly with a small 20" wheel on
