HP Velotechnik Scorpion FS-26 wins 2013 Trike of the Year

The HP Velotechnik Scorpion FS-26 full-suspension trike was awarded Trike of the Year by online presence BentRiderOnline.com

The FS-26 has a superb combination of comfort and efficiency. The handling and the plush ride are unequalled in the industry, with the only downside its comparative weight as compared to non-suspended models.

AlphaBENT keeps the FS-26 in stock as much as possible. "This trike really has a tremendous feel to it. You really have to ride it to appreciate it.", said AlphaBENT owner, Hugh Kern.

More information on the award can be found at the original announcement.

About AlphaBENT

Hugh and the staff at AlphaBENT / PBW know human-powered cycles from the inside out and have the experience that can only come from many years of hands-on mastery helping people across the globe achieve their goals of having FUN, HEALTH, and ADVENTURE riding. See you soon!

A Reverse Chronology of PBW / AlphaBENT

2013: PBW moved the Dixon shop into downtown Sacramento where it has made a permanent home at 1114 C Street.

PBW began using the moniker AlphaBENT to reflect its leading position in the recumbent market. AlphaBENT / PBW is a Premium dealer for ICE and HP Velotechnik, and enjoys the enviable position of being one of the very few Catrike Concept Stores in the world.

2010: PBW made its first expansion starting a shop in Dixon, CA midway between San Francisco's Bay Area and the Sacramento Capitol City. The business expanded quickly as the recumbent trike revolution continued.

2007: Within a few years of selling the first Greenspeed GTO touring trike, the recumbent trike business became the primary focus of Peregrine Bicycle Works.

2006: HP Velotechnik develops their first recumbent trike -- the Scorpion. PBW immediately brings them into the fold and becomes a premium HP Velotechnik dealer.

2005: ICE shifted focus from the custom trike business to a broader spectrum market and signed up its initial dealer network. PBW was at the top of the list and immediately became one of the top ICE dealers in the world.

2003: Paulo Camasmie's Catrike manufacturing business came online and PBW immediately brought Catrike products onto the floor and became a Catrike dealer.

2002: Hugh traded a couple of folding bike frames for a Greenspeed GTO frame and thereby became a Greenspeed recumbent trike dealer. That same year, PBW quickly became Greenspeed's largest California dealer.

2000: at a trade show showing PBW folding bikes in England, Hugh met Greenspeed's Ian Sims and saw and sat in his first Greenspeed recumbent trikes. It was love at first ride.

1997: Peregrine Bicycle Works (PBW) started when Hugh Kern started making custom-built folding bicycles. While learning metalworking, Hugh watched with great interest the progress of a young man named Paulo Camasmie who was developing a manufacturing system for a new brand of recumbent trikes. A year and a half and many metal-splinters and burn blisters after officially starting the business, the first PBW folding bike was shipped.

Greenspeed recumbents Down Under

Greenspeed is the first company to bring a commercially viable recumbent trike to market.

Its founder, Ian Sims, has a long history of design and engineering and a deep understanding of what works.

The Greenspeed GTO is the trike that really started it all. Because of its take-apart capability, it was relatively easy to ship, and helped Greenspeed form a worldwide dealer network. The design of the GTO was refined in 2004 and has filtered into all modern-day Greenspeed trikes including the GT1-5, X1-5, and Magnum.

The GTO remains one of the finest handling, robust platforms in the world today, even as other designs and innovations have evolved around it.

Greenspeed has literally "done it all": manufacturing, marketing, design, engineering in the recumbent industry.

HP Velotechnik German Engineering

AlphaBENT is a Premium HP Velotechnik dealer stocking almost every model of HP Velotechnik made, including bikes and trikes.

Working out of their factory in Kriftel Germany, HP Velotechnik engineers some of the finest-handling recumbent trikes in the world.

There are few trikes as comfortable as the suspension Scorpion models put out by HP Velo, and the front suspension models incorporate such features as anti-sway-bars, and have the most plush rides in the industry.

On the other end of the spectrum, HPVelotechnik also puts out non-suspension versions of its trikes that fold up tightly and have incredibly tight turning radii.

HP Velotechnik recumbent trikes are characterized by:

  • superb handling at speed
  • plush suspension
  • and great low-speed turning.

HP Velo has been engineering fine machines for a long time, and their products show it. These fine designs have come from HP Velotechnik:

  • NoSquat rear suspension, designed to maximize comfort and minimize loss of efficiency
  • split knuckle kingposts maintaining integrated front wheel and axle while allowing convenience of easy wheel removal
  • advanced steering geometry (ASG) for stable high-speed handling mixed with agile low-speed
  • self-locking folding hinge on some models
  • inifinitely adjustable BodyLink hardshell seat

Thanks in part to these innovations, HP Velotechnik's plush full-suspension Scorpion FS-26 won the BROL Recumbent of the Year award for 2013.

Catrike USA made

The AlphaBENT Catrike Concept Store stocks and services the full lineup of USA-made Catrikes ready for you to test-ride.

Catrike trikes are characterized by: efficiency, top-notch components, lightweight design, and sexy good looks -- which means they look and ride like sports cars.

Innovations Catrike has pioneered include:

  • direct steer - lightweight and responsive
  • space frame - lightweight and efficient
  • peace boom - boom extrusion with internal stiffening ribs and anti-twist keyway
  • seat pockets - integrated seatpockets and emergency pump carrier

Catrike includes standard features with all trikes. This minimizes your out-of-pocket costs when purchasing.

  • integrated light mount - a stub that accepts most conventional handlebar-mounting lights
  • computer sensor mount - a bracket to put a sensor pickup for most cycle computers
  • clipless pedals - pedals with cleats that anchor your foot for added safety
  • TerraCycle idler pulleys - top-quality idlers with sealed bearings and durable materials
  • 30-speed barend shifting and drivetrain - bar-end shifters have less effect on steering

It's hard to say if Catrike is more engineering, design, or production. Paulo, Mark, and co. have seemingly waved a magic wand and incarnated a US factory producing world-class products in real-time.

Whatever it is, Catrike does it all, and, on our end, not much gives us more pleasure than calling in another order for another Catrike. We know the Catrike products inside and out, and are consistently amazed at how this outfit accomplishes so much.

The Catrike success story is well worth following.

Fun

Trikes are fun! Everyone loves them. Everyone can ride them.

This means that you'll be looking forward to your next ride instead of dreading it.

These are not your grandfather's trike, though.... Look closer. These are recumbent: which means you sit back in comfort. No pressure points on your wrists or prostate. No cricking of the neck.

Bottom line: "Fun" means this is a machine you will use well.

Take another look: At first blush, they all look the same... but, upon closer examination (and, this is why we encourage you to come in to see and try them personally), you will see stark differences:

  • How high is the seat?
  • How reclined?
  • Does it fold?
  • What steering mechanism does it use?
  • What wheel configuration does it have?
  • Frame construction?
  • Suspension?
  • What brakes?

There are no right or wrong answers, but there is a right answer for you.

We have every commercially available trike that is worth its salt. We'll help you sift through the options. We'll guide you to likely candidates. We'll listen to your feedback.

At AlphaBENT, we are committed to your happiness. We want you to get the right trike no matter what brand, how much you spend, or what options you want... and we won't upsell you and if you are looking at trikes or options that will have you spending more money than you need to spend, we'll tell you so.

Health

If I'd known I was going to live so long, I'd have taken better care of myself. ~Leon Eldred

Fortunately, getting exercise has never been easier. Now that we have recumbent trikes, everyone can get out and exercise regularly.

Whether your goals are to ride for exercise, transportation, recreation, or all of the above, a recumbent trike breaks down the barriers that might stop you from getting out on a cycle.

Balance issues, personal discomfort, or a simple fear of falling all fall by the wayside on a recumbent trike.
